Who We Are

A Distinct Identity

Avian Rescues. Surrendered, Abandoned, Neglected & Escaped. We here at the Sonoran Sanctuary make a point to help any & all domesticated birds. We only run on donations, grants & fees for escaped birds. We do not do what we do to turn a profit. All donations & rehoming fees go right into running the Sonoran Sanctuary. We absorb many of costs such as medical care, 2-month quarantine, attempting to break bad habits like biting or cussing & teaching them not to be afraid of all human. I began this avian network 10/23/08, which 1st began in Upstate NY, though we are no longer located in NY. The Sonoran Sanctuary network was moved here in NC in January of 2013. We wish to 1 day have a location outside of our homes & provide care by an Avian Vet locally 24/7.

Myself & a few other bird “fanatics” travel all over NC locations within 200 mi from our avian habitat. There’s an on-call avian vet for the night & another for days. We quarantine the birds after the rescue & work on stabilizing the bird. (Unless the bird is just an escaped pet.) 1st with an exam then we start trimming beaks, nails, & clip their wings. We work very hard to make them hand tame. Then look for foster homes & adoptions. We only save domesticated birds. Wild birds such as Eagles, Hawks, etc. are best caught by wildlife professionals.

Animal Rescue and Care

One Step at a Time

We rely on grants & donations, along with payments from owners for private catches. We put the bird's wellness 1st. We do everything we can to rescue birds safely. We work along with the humane society & animal control to save bird's whether seized, abandoned or surrendered. We try our best to save every bird but unfortunately, not all can be saved.  We started the Sonoran Sanctuary October of 2008. We are always looking for foster homes & adopting them out. No bird should be alone. As you know some people teach birds some bad habits which we try our hardest to deter them from. We ask that you don't adopt a bird for a child under 16. Birds are not the easiest to take care of. They require a lot of work & care. We ask that you do not adopt solely for breeding purposes. Any adopted birds do require a nonrefundable deposit, a house inspection & an adoption fee. We only ask for typically half of the bird's value which covers transportation, care, food & quarantine. We do not rescue wild birds such as Eagles & Hawks, that is a job for a professional wildlife expert.

Veterinary Services

Reinforcing our Commitment

We are a network of Avian specialists that want to go above & beyond to help rescue domesticated birds. We all have different talents & are registered in the Avian Registry. Everyone has strict guidelines they must abide by in order to foster the birds. The birds are evaluated by a certified medical team & stabilized. Each bird after receiving veterinarian care are then placed in a foster home where they will be quarantined for 2 months. We work hard to give the birds comfortable & safe homes. At their pace, we work on the handling & trust issues. We try our best to give each bird a therapeutic place. Our goal is to rescue, retrain & rehome. Giving the birds a 2nd chance.

Animal Shelters

Helping The Community

We are always looking to expand. If you feel you'd like to join our network & save birds with us too, please ask. We are always looking for good people who will give their all to help a bird. You will have to go through training. We believe in on hand teaching. You will be required to have insurance of your own. Expect the occasional bite or scratch. Because of the size of our organization & the fact that it is not for profit we do not have health insurance. We ask that you have a valid license & a full background check. Even if you don't house the birds & you're just driving or assisting, we will still accept you into our family. This job is not for everyone. If at anytime you feel you can't do this please let us know so we can make sure your duties are covered by someone else. We would prefer a 2 wk notice but we can't make you. We'll be sad to see you go but we do understand.  We like to say the pay sucks but the benefits are outstanding.
